    Laboratory Research

    Conducted brain research under professor John Garcia, Ph.D., in the Department of Psychology and in the UCLA hospital’s Brain Research Institute and Neuropsychiatric Institute. Emphasis on the brain substrate of learning and behavior, the neural basis of the nature-nurture interface in the maintenance of homeostasis and survival, the role and function of the amygdala. Conducted animal behavioral experiments, processing slides of brain tissue, performing indwelling electrode recordings, performing various surgeries, data analysis and interpretation.

    Employment as research assistant and teaching assistant.

    Team taught with Dr. Garcia the genetic evolution of learning mechanisms.

    Clinical Work

    Graduate experience included working with hyperactive and autistic children under professor Ivar Lovaas, Ph.D. Other experiences included doing sessions with clients in the psychotherapy clinic (CSULB). Performing intake sessions with sleep disorders patients in the hospital clinic (UCLA Sleep Disorders Clinic; VA Hospital Sleep Disorders Clinic; Harbor/UCLA Sleep Disorders Clinic). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was part of the Sleep Medicine training addressing insomnia.

    Qualified and sat for medical board exam in specialty of Sleep Medicine. Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (F.A.A.S.M.) Employment in the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center under Dr. Donna Arand. Recorded multiple parameters of physiology during sleep, learned to read brain waves, heart beat complex, learned signs and symptoms of disorders and diseases. Training continued, learning medicine in general, learning and making preliminary differential diagnoses and treatment plans, conducted case conferences. Started teaching sleep medicine to physicians and Fellows in rotations and as part of the accredited Fellowship program in Sleep Medicine at the Greater Los Angeles VA Hospital.

    Experience included collecting heart rate data for UCLA professor Ron Harper, Ph.D., who was researching the interrelatedness between neurology-cardiology-pulmonary diseases, e.g., seizure disorders, sudden infant death syndrome, congestive heart failure, etc.
